Frequently Asked Questions
What do architects charge?
Architect’s Fees are based on a percentage of the construction cost of your project, and adjusted for the service required (Full or Partial). The percentage is based on the Gazetted Recommended Scale of Fees published by SACAP.
Do I really need a qualified architect for my project?
Registered architects are professionally trained, studying for 5 years, followed by 2 years of post-graduate (under-mentor) training before being able to write the professional practice exam, and register as a professional architect. Only fully qualified architects can use the title: Pr. Arch.
Architects will not only bring creative solutions to projects of any size, but they will add value to your project through- for example:
– Design for functional use of space,
– Maximising natural light to reduce energy consumption
– navigating planning permission and limitations
– ensuring quality delivery according to specifications
– assessing interim claims for payment submitted by your contractor
While it may be cheaper to use someone who is not a qualified architect (such as an ‘architectural’ designer/consultant/draughtsman) – it’s important to realise the value of an architect’s skill and professional knowledge. You will benefit from having well-detailed documentation for builders to price and therefore less risk during construction. Having unforeseen problems arising due to poor design, or minimal detailing could cost you far more than the architect’s fees in the long run.
Can any architect do any type of project?
Generally the training an architect receives is fairly diverse, giving them tools to approach any design brief. However, experience is an architect’s most valuable asset. The more experience an architect has in a particular field, the better the design result. So, always look at their experience and client references.
